Shane Douglas: He put together a group of talent that was incredible and underexposed. Each of us had our strengths and Paul saw what nobody else did. Who would have ever thought that Shane Douglas, in 1993, would be one of the hottest heels in the business?
At that time heels had to be fat, with a wart on their face and a beer gut. Paul was one of the few that said, “This guy can be a natural heel, let him go with it.” What [he] didn’t do was have someone go out there and cut promos on Tazz about how short he was. Nobody came out there and said Shane Douglas can’t do a moonsault . . .
Prior to the time he sold his stake in ecw to Paul Heyman, rumors were rampant that Tod Gordon was actually helping wcw sign away ecw’s talent pool. While Heyman wanted to hold on to as much talent as he possibly could, Gordon had a different philosophy: that the ecw brand was what sold tickets, and that everyone was replaceable.
Tod Gordon: Paul and I disagreed so much when Public Enemy left.
He felt crushed by it, believing it was a terrible thing they did. And meanwhile, I’m helping them move on. I was the one who called Kevin Sullivan and tried to get them a better deal than Vince was giving them — which they got. I said, these guys busted their asses for me, don’t get mad because their taking $150,000 and I’m giving them $50,000. They’re my friends, they tried to help me make money, more power to them.
By late 1997, Tod Gordon had officially split from ecw. He saw the writing on the wall. He knew the company was in deep trouble.
Tod Gordon: It had become so much more of a business than pleasure — meaning more things were going on than just sitting there and creating angles. So many details were bogging down our day—things that were not Paul’s strong suit — that, unfortunately, we were less and less able to focus on the product itself.
The exodus of talent to wcw did damage ecw, no matter what Tod Gordon believed. ecw hadn’t become established as the kind of brand name that could survive without the performers fans came
